Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort
Antique bust, made in 1881 by the French artist Paul Francois Belouin. The bust is made of plaster, the base is painted dark brown. The bust represents Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, as inscribed on the front side of the base. Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (31 January 1673 – 28 April 1716) was a French Roman Catholic priest and Confessor. He was known in his time as a preacher and was made a missionary apostolic by Pope Clement XI.
The bust is signed on the back by the artist with 'PAUL BELOUIN, ATELIER CHAREAU ANGERS' and with 'anno 1881'. The bust weighs 2 kgs and is 31.5 cm high.
The French artist Paul Froncois Belouin made his busts and statues in the last quarter of the 19th century. In the Basilique Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre, he made the large statue of Père de Montfort in 1888 (see picture). The musée des beaux-arts in Angers has works of him too. Het exposed at the Salon.
Condition: Partly wear of surface areas. The base looks as having an old repair/break, perhaps that's why it is painted in brown.
